The VSRC was established in 1982 and now has a team with 35 members. We conduct research into all areas of road and vehicle safety on behalf of Government and Industry as well as conducting our own original research. The team has a broad range of skills covering the vehicle and road safety fields and is also part of a much wider network of engineering specialists giving access to modelling and crash testing facilities, driving simulators and other experimental equipment.

We have a strong accident investigation team that examines crashes to understand the causation of the accident – primary safety - and the role of the vehicle in preventing injuries – passive safety. We can conduct broad ranging research studies to provide feedback on engineering developments and will also investigate individual accidents for special purposes. Our crash investigation capabilities are second to none.

Our research is used in many areas. Vehicle and component manufacturers use our information to obtain feedback on new technologies and to develop their safety strategies. The new area of active safety relies on information from the real-world for technologies to be most effective. Governments use the data to develop new road and vehicle safety policies both at national and at EU level. Road operators can use our resources to build safer roads while road safety practitioners can encourage better road user behaviour.
