Intelligent transport and active safety systems are increasingly expected to provide a major contribution to casualty reduction by preventing crashes from occurring. We conducts research to support systems development and to identify technologies with the greatest capability for casualty reduction.
Current thinking on appropriate counter measures range from warning the drivers of potential crash scenarios, to taking complete and automatic control of the driving task away from the driver. Audible and Haptic warning systems can for example alert the driver when the vehicle strays over the road centre line or becomes too close to the vehicle ahead, giving time for appropriate action. On the other hand, research continues on systems which are more interventionist. For example, automatic speed control of vehicles according to local restrictions.
The effectiveness of all these systems depend on knowledge of events leading up to a crash and we continue our involvement in studies which aim to provide just that information for the UK (OTS) and for Europe (SafetyNet).
