We have a long history in the study of ways to reduce injury severity once a crash has occurred. For many years the Centre has worked with industry and UK government, contributing to development of passive safety technology and injury biomechanics (CCIS) and recently to development of 'Smart' restraint systems (PRISM, BOSCOS, Small Drivers).

In-Depth Crash injury studies form the backbone to development of Passive Safety as well as the best means to assess the benefits of crash test programmes and new vehicle designs. The VSRC has a continual involvement in the development of crash injury studies both in the UK (CCIS) and European wide (PENDANT, CHILD). Internationally we also contribute to Europe wide organisations actively disseminating the results of passive safety studies such as the Passive Safety Network (PSN).
