Overview: SafetyNet is a 6th framework Integrated project co-funded by the European Commission, Directorate-General Transport & Energy. The project began on the 1st of May 2004 and will be carried out over a duration of four years. The project Consortium consists of 21 partners from 14 EU member states and 3 non EU countries. This partnership brings together many of the most experienced organisations in the field of road and vehicle safety. In its 2001 White Paper The European Commission identified the need for a “Road Safety Observatory” and it is the intention of this project to provide the EC with the building blocks for such an Observatory.
Objectives: The EU target of a 50% reduction in fatalities by 2010 will only be achieved by the introduction of the most effective countermeasures. It relies on the existence of basic knowledge of crashes and their causation and the availability of road safety data to monitor and assess performance. When complete the data resources developed within SafetyNet will revolutionise the EU approaches to road safety.
Main features of project: This is an ambitious and exciting project that will assemble a co-ordinated set of data resources which together will meet the EC needs for policy support. The Road Safety Observatory will enable the Commission to monitor progress towards targets, identify best practise, and ensure that new regulatory and other safety actions will result in the maximum casualty reduction. All data assembled or gathered within the project will be available over the web to the entire road safety community.
Our role: The VSRC are the Coordinators of this project as well as working at a technical level in several of the work packages. |
