Overview: This project is being undertaken on behalf of the Transport Technology and Standards division of the Department for Transport (DfT). The VSRC are managing the project and undertaking the majority of the work. A small element has been sub-contracted to MIRA. The main phase of the project ran from January 2004 till December 2005; additional work to support the DfT at a European Working Group has recently been commissioned.

Objectives: Improvements in car secondary safety, have in the past, been seen as an effective means to casualty reduction. Looking to the future, it is necessary for the DfT to have an evidence based approach to determine where best future casualty savings can be made. This project has reviewed existing UK and international research and undertaken new analysis in order to identify the highest priority injuries sustained in modern passenger cars according to their frequency and cost and how they could be addressed by vehicle design. During the course of the project vehicle safety experts from international organizations have contributed their knowledge and peer reviewed the outcomes through a series of workshops and consultations.

Our role: Fundamental to the successful completion of the project has been the development, by the VSRC, of a new approach to injury costing that is now recognized as a powerful research tool within the vehicle safety community. The VSRC
