Casualty reduction through better vehicles, roads and drivers
The VSRC is at the forefront in setting up and maintaining national and international databases that are used to support UK and EC road and vehicle safety policy making and safety led design. The success in developing and sustaining these in-depth real world traffic collision databases has been largely due to valuable co-operation from UK police forces, Accident & Emergency hospitals, H M Coroners and vehicle recovery garages. These safety information systems form the basis for much of the Centre's research activities.
Our team is also in a unique position to conduct research into the emerging field of active safety. It has skills in accident analysis and human factors and the resources on in-depth accident studies and is currently involved in a range of innovative studies into new active safety systems.
The five topics describing our research capabilities are not mutually exclusive. More than one area can identify outstanding safety issues to reduce the number of casualties and their injuries. Each topic area can also take into account groups with special requirements such as children, elderly people, small women drivers and those with disabilities. Recent and current projects are identified under each topic with links to project information and project websites as well as links to relevant reports and publications that are in the public domain.
