Road Safety

Key areas

police car
  • Human Factors
  • Driver behaviour
  • Road infrastructure and layout
  • Safety barriers
  • Black Spots

Ensuring that road design is safe is another area of study targeted at reducing the liklihood of a crash but one which also encompasses an element of passive safety i.e. reducing the severity of injury should a crash occur.

We are involved in a number of studies which examine the road infrastructure (RISER; OTS). For example, recommending moving or removal of objects such as poles and trees away from the roadside where the may restrict drivers' line of sight and be struck by vehicles. The strategic placement of appropriately designed crash barriers and crash cushions can be used to reduce the likelihood of severe injury when vehicles lose control as can the employment of frangible lighting poles. The identification of accident black spots and the recommendations for road layout changes as well as design and placement of road furniture forms the backbone of our current road safety research.
