Casualty reduction through better vehicles, roads and drivers

The Vehicle Safety Research Centre contributes modules to the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes provided by several Loughborough University's departments including a Teaching Module in Automotove Crash Protection - Crashworthiness Design and Standards that is run through the Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering (IPTME). This is the only module of its kind in the UK and aims to provide a detailed understanding of all issues relating to crash and injury prevention in road traffic accidents.

The VSRC wants to share its valuable resources and expertise to support PhD students and currently supervises 5 students researching accident causation, prevention and long term injury outcome. It welcomes applications from academically high achievers interested in studying for a PhD within the Centre.

To gain a better insight to the areas of research undertaken by the Centre then go to our Research Areas section of this website.

Recent and Current PhD Projects

PhD Entry Requirements

Potential applicants should hold a recognised degree in a relevant field. If a bachelor's degree is used as an entry qualification then this should be at upper second-class level or above. If your first language is not English you will need an acceptable English language qualification. http://www.lboro.ac.uk/prospectus/pg/general/essential/requirements/index.htm

PhD Funding

There are three ways in which research can be funded: project funded, self funded and other funded.

Project funded Nearly all our research work is externally funded by research grants and sometimes this funding includes a provision for a research studentship allied to the specific research project. Where this is the case then such studentships are advertised on our VSRC news and vacancies web page as well as being advertised on http://www.jobs.ac.uk

Self Funded Self funded research students, from within the EU, who wish to pursue research in any area broadly related to the research areas within the VSRC are welcome to contact us for further information.

Self funded research students, from outside of the EU, who wish to pursue research in any area related to the research areas within the VSRC are welcome to contact us for further infomation. Potential research students can apply for a scholarship which is awarded on indiviual merit. The scholarship amounts to a £3,000 per year reduction in the tuition fee charged by the University for such students.

Other funded Various organisation offer support for research students. Some sources for international students can be found here: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/admin/ar/funding/pgr/international/external/index.htm
